Yellville Woman Arrested on Drug Charges
On 1-20-15 Laura Owens, age 45, of Yellville was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance with Purpose to Deliver (Marijuana), a Class D Felony, Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance, a Class D Felony, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia for the use of Methamphetamine, a Class D Felony, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia for use of Marijuana, Class A Misdemeanor, and Possession of a Schedule IV Controlled Substance, a Class A Misdemeanor.

The arrest stems from an investigation by the Marion County Sheriff's Office, Flippin Police Department, 14th Judicial Drug Task Force, Special Agents from the Arkansas State Police, and United States Postal Investigators. The Marion County Sheriff's Office was contacted by the Post Office during the morning of 1-20-15 and advised of a suspicious package. Officers determined the package contained marijuana and learned the package was scheduled to be delivered to Owens at a residence in Yellville. The package came from California. Officers contacted Postal Investigators from the Little Rock, Arkansas area who traveled to Marion County to assist with the investigation. Officers applied for a search warrant which was granted by Judge Jason Duffy. Officers made arrangements for Postal Investigators to deliver the package to Owens as scheduled while officers from each local agency conducted surveillance. Officers observed Postal Investigators deliver the package which Owens signed for. Immediately following the delivery of the package officers from each Department executed the search warrant at Owens residence. At that time Owens was arrested without incident.

During the course of the search of the residence officers located approximately one pound of high grade marijuana which was in the box that was delivered to Owens, an amount of Hydrocodone pills, an amount of Xanax pills, straws with white residue suspected to be used to snort methamphetamine, containers with a white residue suspected to be methamphetamine residue, numerous marijuana smoking devices, numerous containers with suspected marijuana residue, several baggies containing a small amount of marijuana, items used for the sale of narcotics such as weighing scales, and an amount of U.S. Currency. The currency was seized. The value of the approximate pound of high grade marijuana is estimated to be $4,800.00. The value of this high grade marijuana is approximately three times more than traditional or locally grown marijuana. Authorities in Marion County have noticed an increase in high grade marijuana in the area over the past few years.

Bond for Owens was set at $10,000.00 by Judge Jason Duffy. Owens posted bond on 1-20-15 and is awaiting a first appearance in Marion County Circuit Court. The investigation will continue and local officers will work with law enforcement authorities in California in efforts to identify the suspects involved in mailing marijuana from California to Arkansas.
