Scam Alert

Several Marion County Residents have been victims of phone scams recently. The scam begins when the victim receives by a phone call from a person posing/acting as a relative, grandson, stepson, etc. The scammer has obtained enough personal information as to pose as the person they are imitating and claiming to be. The scam involves the imposter claiming to have been arrested and needs money to post a bond to get out of ‘jai’. The caller will result to crying, calling the victim ‘grandma’ or personal family names when requesting money. The scammer states to the victim a ‘bondsman’ will be contacting the victim and explain how much money is needed and where to send the money. The person posing as a ‘bondsman’ will call shortly after; and using what sounds like the proper verbiage and jargon, convincing the victim they are a ‘bondsman’, is  trying to help the victim’s ‘grandson’ , or whoever the scammer is posing to be.  If the scammers feel they are successful in convincing the victim to send money, they often will raise the amount of the money needed to free the ‘imposter grandson’ from jail.

If a phone call is received in this nature and to keep from becoming a ‘victim’ verify the callers ID by asking questions only the real family person would know, parents name, birth date, home address of parents, brother-sister names. Get call back phone numbers, name of facility the caller is calling from, jail name, police department that made the alleged arrests, etc. Tell the caller that you have to contact their parents, the police, an attorney, delay the action until the alleged incident is verified to your satisfaction. Never send money anywhere or to anyone until you are positive as to whom the money is going. Never give account numbers over the phone.
